The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Katsina State, Corps Commander Maxwell Kaltungo Lede, has called for the reactivation of the State Advisory Council on Road Safety (SaRSAC) to strengthen efforts in reducing road accidents and fatalities.

Commander Lede, accompanied by senior officers and special marshals, made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor of Katsina State, Alhaji Farouk Lawal Jobe, at his office on Monday.

In his remarks, Lede said the visit was not only for familiarisation but also to consolidate ongoing efforts towards achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of reducing road traffic fatalities by 50 per cent by the year 2030.

He highlighted the Deputy Governor’s role as chairman of the state’s SaRSAC, noting that while the council had been inaugurated, it had remained largely inactive in fulfilling its mandate. He stressed the urgent need to revitalise the council with evidence-based strategies in line with Nigeria’s Road Safety Strategy (NRSS) and the globally recognised “Safe System Approach” to road safety management.

“The office of the Deputy Governor is critical to effective road safety management in the state,” Lede said, urging for renewed commitment to ensure Katsina plays its part in meeting national and global targets.

In his response, Deputy Governor Jobe commended the FRSC for its work but expressed concern over unsafe practices by motorists, particularly issues of overloading. He urged the corps to intensify enforcement to address such challenges.

The Deputy Governor also pledged the government’s support for the reactivation of SaRSAC, including the appointment of a focal desk officer in his office to ensure smooth coordination of activities.

Commander Lede, meanwhile, praised Governor Malam Dikko Umar Radda for his administration’s achievements in infrastructure and for creating an enabling environment for effective road safety operations in the state.
